Diwali, the ancient Hindu “Festival of Lights,” is a vibrant celebration symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. Traditionally celebrated with grand enthusiasm in India and by the Indian diaspora worldwide, Diwali’s radiance is increasingly illuminating cities across the United States.
From Times Square spectacles to local community gatherings, the US is embracing Diwali with open arms, offering a rich tapestry of cultural experiences. If you’re looking to join the festivities, here’s a glimpse into some of the most prominent Diwali events nationwide, along with a special focus on celebrations right here in Minnesota!
Major Diwali celebrations across the United States
As the Indian American population grows, so does the scale and visibility of Diwali. Here are some of the biggest and most famous celebrations you might encounter:
Diwali at Times Square
Imagine the iconic Times Square aglow with even more light and energy! This massive public event transforms the “Crossroads of the World” into a lively festival featuring high-energy Bollywood performances, cultural showcases, and a palpable festive spirit. It’s truly a sight to behold.
San Francisco Bay Area, California: West Coast Radiance
The Bay Area, with its thriving tech and cultural scene, hosts numerous vibrant Diwali events. From Bhangra & Beats Night Markets to fun runs and expansive community melas (fairs) brimming with food, arts, and cultural activities, there’s something for everyone. California has even designated Diwali as an official statewide holiday!
Washington, D.C. Area: A National Celebration
The nation’s capital also shines bright for Diwali. The National Museum of Asian Art often hosts a prominent, free evening celebration featuring live music, traditional dance, rangoli (colorful floor art) making, and delicious festive food. Beyond public events, the White House annually hosts its own Diwali celebration, acknowledging the festival’s importance at the highest levels of government.
Chicago, Illinois: Midwestern Melas
Chicago’s diverse communities come alive with large-scale Diwali melas. These vibrant fairs are a hub of activity, offering cultural performances, bustling vendor booths, dazzling fashion shows, and energetic dance competitions. Unforunately, they canceled the 6th annual mela in 2025.
Texas (Dallas & Houston): Southern Grandeur
Not to be outdone, major Texas metropolitan areas like Dallas and Houston are renowned for their grand Diwali melas, which attract thousands of visitors and feature elaborate, large-scale celebrations.
Diwali in the Land of 10,000 Lakes: Minnesota Celebrates!
Minnesota’s Indian American community brings a beautiful array of Diwali festivities to the state, particularly in the Twin Cities metro area. While exact dates and venues can shift annually, these are some of the key celebrations to look out for. (Note: Diwali’s main day in 2025 is Monday, October 20th, with events often occurring on surrounding weekends).
Hindu Society of Minnesota (HSMN) Diwali Celebration:
The Hindu Society of Minnesota (HSMN) is a cornerstone of the community and traditionally hosts one of the largest public Diwali celebrations in the state. Often held at spacious venues like the M Health Fairview Sports Center in Woodbury, these events are packed with cultural performances, traditional music, delectable Indian cuisine, and a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere.[Source Link: Check the official HSMN website for their annual Diwali celebration details: hindutemplemn.org]
Midtown Global Market Celebration (Minneapolis):
The Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis is known for its diverse cultural events, and Diwali is frequently on its calendar. Expect live music, captivating cultural performances, and engaging family activities that showcase the beauty of the festival.
Local City & Community Events (e.g., Edina):
Many suburban cities and local community organizations also host their own unique Diwali celebrations. For example, the Edina Asian American Alliance (EAAA) has organized “Diwali Weekend Kickoff” events at locations like Nolan Mains Plaza (50th and France), featuring Bollywood dance, live music, and artisan vendors. Keep an eye on your local city’s event listings!
University & Student Organizations:
University campuses, especially the University of Minnesota, are dynamic hubs for Diwali celebrations. Student groups often organize “Diwali Night” events, which are incredibly popular. These usually include dazzling performances, a festive dinner, and social dancing, creating a lively atmosphere for students and the wider community.
Temple & Religious Celebrations:
Beyond the larger public events, various Hindu temples and religious centers across Minnesota hold special prayers (pujas), ceremonies, and community dinners to observe Diwali in a traditional and spiritual manner. These are wonderful opportunities for reflection and community gathering.

👗 Fashion that shines
Guests are encouraged to wear a blend of traditional and modern attire. This dress code is optional. Neon accessories like wrist bands and glow paint will be provided at the event.
